Embedded SW Application Lead Engineer

Powertrain Engineering is contributing to the Volvo Group’s competitive position in the market place by developing and maintaining profitable products and product components in terms of quality, delivery, cost and function and that comply with all applicable regulatory requirements. Our scope of work includes engineering and design of engines, gearboxes, axles and hybrid technologies, based on common architecture and shared technology.
We design all powertrain embedded electronic systems and software, delivering Engine, Exhaust-Gas After-Treatment System and Transmission solutions for all Volvo Group products.
We are responsible for the applications of Volvo products in South America and perform global platform development in close collaboration with the engineering centers in Sweden, France, Japan and US.
Position Description:
We are currently looking for a motivated and qualified professional who wants a challenging career opportunity as Embedded Software Engineer in areas that handle Combustion Control.
We work in an agile way. In this position you will be member of a cross functional team of 5 to 6 engineers with complementary skills committed to a common purpose of leading the technical development of solutions for heavy duty and medium duty powertrain electronic systems. Each agile team synchronizes the work planning with the global development team every 10 weeks. The planning is then split into 3 weeks long sprints.
The solutions are implemented using mostly graphical programing tools (especially Simulink), which can automatically generate C code. A few activities require manual coding using C language.
To be successful in this position you are requested to be highly knowledgeable in medium duty / heavy duty vehicle applications, in order to design and improve functional systems and solve system problems by understanding and managing the physical phenomena related to the combustion engines (Combustion itself, Air and Gas Management, Fuel Injection).
The main activities will include:

  • Develop software strategies, functions and features aiming to enhance the final product in features such as fuel consumption, reliability and compliance with emission legislations. It implies handling several phases of products life, from Advanced Engineering to Product Projects and Product Maintenance;

  • Be active on the quality domain by performing critical analysis, evaluating the complete system, proposing, testing, and following-up solutions;

  • Interface with a number of stakeholders - project team members, SW development team members and other engineering areas – in our multi-site organization, creating strong networks driving proactive and constructive co-operation;

  • Being an active community member and contribute with process teams.

Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • Engineering degree - Electrical, Mechatronics or equivalent;

  • Good knowledge of heavy duty truck application and how Control Systems and Calibration strategies impact transport solutions OR good knowledge of engine and after-treatment functions;

  • Previous professional experience in embedded software development for automotive products;

  • Solid knowledge of specific tools - Matlab/Simulink and C programming languages;

  • Driver licence for trucks will be considered a merit;

  • Other computer science / programming language skills (e.g. Matlab scripts, Python, code version control, etc.) are considered a plus;

  • Fluent in English and Portuguese (Written & Verbal).
